Blogging for LGBT Families Day: Contributed Posts

Blogging for LGBT Families DayWelcome to Blogging for LGBT Families Day! Below is the master list of contributed posts.

I’ll be updating this with latecomers on Tuesday (I’m all about inclusion here), so it’s not to late to participate! Just post on your own blog and send me the link or leave a comment here with the link.

Thanks to everyone who contributed already. A special thanks to the Family Equality Council for their sponsorship of the event. Thanks as well to The Bilerico Project, COLAGE, Freedom to Marry, PageOneQ, Pam’s House Blend, PFLAG, Queercents, and the many others who went the extra mile in encouraging participation.

I hope you take the time to read other people’s posts and enjoy the diversity of the LGBT community and our allies. Over the next few days, I’ll be reading through all the entries myself, and writing up some posts that pull together various related themes that emerge.

[UPDATED: June 4, 12:45am Eastern.] Posts are alphabetical by name of blog. Starred (*) posts are new since last update. Putting them after a jump since the list is getting long now.

  8. [Apologies in advance for poor writing and cheesiness.]

One of my cousins is a lesbian and I’ve known her and her partner for as long as I can remember. (As my mom’s sister is eighteen years her senior, all my cousins are in their late forties, so they have been more like aunts than cousins to me.) Although they don’t have children, over the years they have been very much a part of my life and the lives of their nieces and nephews. They are marvelous, caring people — both middle school teachers — who have always been actively supportive of my life and dreams. During the difficult times in my life, they were always there for me. They were the ones I could talk to at family parties — unlike my aunt, who would either be completely ignoring or disturbingly doting on me, depending on my weight; my second cousins, who were much younger than me and spent the entire time with the toys and games they had brought with them; or my uncle, who would only seem to consent to talk to my dad and otherwise make random crass remarks. I owe a lot to them — especially the thought that extended family can really be a loving support network.

I believe that any couple, regardless of sexual orientation, who want to provide a loving and nurturing environment for children, their own or adopted, should be not only allowed but encouraged to do so. I feel that, should I come to a point in my life at which I decide that I’d like to raise children, I should be allowed to. Regardless of whether that will ever happen, it should not be barred from me because of my sexual orientation.
