Family Profiles

Binational Moms of 3 Fight to Keep Family Together

I was feeling punchy yesterday when waiting to see if the Supreme Court would issue its decision on marriage equality. I’m in a more serious mood today, though, so I thought I’d share this video of Catriona and Cathy, a binational couple who are fighting to keep their family together despite the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

Older Children of Same-Sex Parents, Real and Imagined

One of the best things about The Fosters, ABC Family’s new “two-mama drama,” is that the kids are all older children, and we see much of the action from their perspectives—balancing the many storylines from other shows about same-sex parents and their tiny tots. A few articles from real adult children with LGBT parents caught my eye this week—as did an interview with David Lambert, who plays the oldest child on The Fosters.

Another Son of Lesbian Moms Speaks Out for Equality

Eighteen-year-old high school senior Riley Roberts spoke to the Nevada Assembly last week in favor of repealing the state’s ban on marriage for same-sex couples. Why does he care? He has lesbian moms. Watch his emotional testimony after the jump.

Parenting Is Love (and a Little Nagging)

There was so much good stuff going around for Mother’s Day that I neglected to share this great one-minute video from The Righteous Conversations Project, which brings together Holocaust survivors and teens to speak up about injustice. The video isn’t about the Holocaust, though; if anything, it’s about parental nagging in the age of social media. It comes via Keshet, the organization for LGBT inclusion in Jewish life—but I think it speaks to a commonality of many families.

Reflections on 20 Years of Marriage

(I mentioned my 20th anniversary here a few weeks ago. Here are my further thoughts on the milestone, from my Mombian newspaper column.)

My spouse Helen and I recently celebrated our 20th anniversary. Only about six of those years have been as legal spouses—but that just gives us a chance to celebrate both our real anniversary and our Massachusetts “Massaversary” several months from now. (Twice the cake is always a good thing, I say.) Hitting the 20-year milestone, however, has made me reflect on some of the things I’ve learned about marriage in that time, and some of the things I never expected when we started out.

Helen and I Celebrate 20 Happy (but Not Legal) Years Together

My spouse Helen and I are celebrating our 20th anniversary in about a week. Coincidentally, the U.S. Supreme Court will be hearing two cases on marriage equality at the same time. I’m hoping our happy anniversary vibes will sway them.

LGBTQ Parenting Roundup

LGBT Parenting Roundup

This week’s roundup includes two family profiles, including one of the first lesbian in the U.K. to use assisted insemination, a couple of twisty legal issues, a lovely school story, and more.

New Book by Lesbian Moms Looks at Racial Justice and LGBT Equality

In his second inaugural speech, President Obama linked “Seneca Falls, and Selma, and Stonewall”—the birthplaces of the women’s, Black, and LGBT equality movements—and reminded us of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s words that (as Obama paraphrased) “our individual freedom is inextricably bound to the freedom of every soul on Earth.” A new book about two lesbian moms and their children reminds us that LGBT equality is indeed bound to the need for racial justice.
