Marking 16 Years of Marriage Equality — and More

Today is a day of celebration! November 18 is the anniversary of the historic 2003 ruling that made Massachusetts the first U.S. state to allow same-sex couples to marry. It also marks the 2003 repeal of the U.K.’s anti-LGBTQ Section 28 law. Additionally, it’s the “Massaversary” of when my spouse and I legally wed (though we celebrate our true anniversary in April).

Rainbows Are Made of Visible Light: A Post for National Coming Out Day

Today is National Coming Out Day. This year, it falls just days after the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in a case that could deny employment protections to LGBTQ people and force many of us back into the closet in order to keep supporting our families. As many of us queer parents know from personal experience, coming out is not just a simple matter of finding the courage, but of balancing our needs and those of our children.

Happy Father’s Day to All the Dads (and 3 Things You Can Do to Help Bring Equality to Their Lives)

Wishing a very happy Father’s Day (or Fathers’ Day, if that’s how you roll) to all of the dads out there! Gay dads, bisexual dads, transgender and gender creative dads, straight dads who love and support their LGBTQ children (or their LGBTQ parents), people who are father figures regardless of biological or legal fatherhood, and anyone else who uses this day to honor your parenthood, may it be a time of joy and love. In addition to new ties, however, get the dads in your life something they’ll really appreciate: your efforts towards equality! Here are three ways to do so.

Mother’s Day as an Act of Resistance

Mother’s Day and Father’s Day can be fraught times for LGBTQ parents and our children, seemingly designed to underscore that our families are different. I try to see them, however, as opportunities to remind the world that queer families exist. By raising our voices on these days—or sometimes, simply being visible—we resist the attempts of those trying to ignore or eliminate us, and we welcome all who take on the mantle of parenthood.

International Family Equality Day

Happy International Family Equality Day!

Today marks the 8th annual International Family Equality Day, and organizations and individuals in over 100 cities and 50 countries across the globe will be taking part!

Passover Questions for LGBTQ Families

Passover begins tonight, and although I’m somewhat casual in my observance, I love that the holiday, which commemorates the Jewish people’s journey out of slavery in Egypt, has become a time for reflection on freedom and social justice. This year, I’ve been thinking about how we LGBTQ parents might use the traditional “Four Questions” of Passover to guide our modern-day journeys.
