It’s hard to believe a dozen years have passed since I began this project, two years after I became a parent. George W. Bush was still president and Massachusetts was the only state that allowed same-sex couples to marry. I’ve blogged through the progress of the Obama years (notwithstanding setbacks like HB2 in North Carolina) and into what feels like a pendulum swing back to a time of bias and misunderstanding.
Still, we do now have marriage equality, anti-discrimination protections for sexual orientation and gender identity in more states, improvements in school climate, and more representation of LGBTQ families in children’s books, on television, and in mainstream media than when I started. In many ways, we’re louder and prouder than we’ve ever been. As always, I’m humbled to have been one of many chroniclers of our community’s progress and challenges.
It’s been quite a journey, and I remain grateful for your company and friendship. Here’s to our families and everything we do to fill them with love.
