Listen Up: LGBTQ Family Podcast Picks

Already binged the whole new season of Orange Is the New Black and looking for some entertainment? Try these recent podcast episodes about LGBTQ families and youth.

• First, if you haven’t been listening to “The Accidental Gay Parents,” a series from parenting podcast The Longest Shortest Time, go catch up now. The latest episode just came out a couple of weeks ago, and updates us on dads Trystan and Biff’s journey to expanding their family via pregnancy.
• The Scholastic Reads podcast interviewed Bill Koniesburg, author of young adult books Openly Straight, The Porcupine of Truth, and Honestly Ben, about growing up as a gay teen in New York City, the importance of seeing oneself in books, and the books he wishes he could have read as a teen.
• WNYC Studios’ newish Nancy podcast is always full of LGBTQ goodness, but I particularly liked their latest episode, about a classroom of eight- and nine-year-olds who wrote letters to transgender teen Gavin Grimm to support him in his court battles. We also hear a bit of audio from Grimm’s visit to the school, where he shows us how cool he is around kids (which is not a feat every 19-year-old can manage). There’s also a lovely segment about a gay teen drag queen growing up in the remote town of Unalaska, Alaska which is also heartening (but has a couple of NSFW words, so fair warning if you have younger ones around).
• Arianna Huffington spoke with Glennon Doyle Melton of Momastery (and new spouse of soccer star Abby Wambach) for the Thrive Global Podcast about “Her Blended Family, Hitting Rock Bottom and Finding Her Identity.”
• Finally, Family Equality Council continues its series of practical podcasts on “essential topics for LGBTQ families, or members of the LGBTQ community who are thinking about starting a family.” The latest, just in time for the end of the school year, is about “Becoming an Empty Nester.”
