This Monday is the television premiere of Gender Revolution: A Journey with Katie Couric, and I highly recommend it to everyone. The documentary blends both personal stories and scientific knowledge to present a textured and understanding look at gender and what it means to be intersex or transgender. Here’s a sneak peek.

Couric said in a press call in January that she developed the documentary “for people who wanted to be educated, like me,” including members of families both like and unlike those in the film. “I attempted to give people a framework for a more informed conversation,” she added. I think she’s succeeded, and that this has the potential to become the go-to film for parents, teachers, teens, and any others seeking a place to begin learning about transgender and intersex people. For more about the making of the film (and the associated National Geographic magazine issue), see my earlier article.

Gender Revolution will premiere on the National Geographic channel Monday, February 6, at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT, and will air on National Geographic in 171 countries and 45 languages. It will also be available through on-demand services, National Geographic television apps, and with Hulu subscriptions a day after it airs, and will be for sale via Amazon Video, iTunes, Google Play.
