Free Tickets for Same-Sex Parents to Show About a Girl with Two Gay Dads

Upstream SwimmingLindsey Steinert grew up with two gay dads in the early 90’s, before that was “cool”—and she’s written and performs in a one-woman off-Broadway show about her experience.

Upstream Swimming is “A One-Woman Show About A Totally ‘Normal’ Girl (With 2 Gay Dads), and Steinert claims it’s “the first (and only) one-person show to be written and performed by an actual child of same-sex parents.” (The 2009 Canadian hit, My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding, by David Hein, had a multi-person cast.)

The show’s website notes that Steinert “began gathering material for Upstream Swimming at age 14, when she would discretely record her family’s dinner conversations.” Parents, beware.

Steinert has also made this offer:

Because the desire to provoke social change is what compelled Lindsey to write Upstream Swimming, she will be offering same-sex couples who either have children or are considering starting a family and attend the show together FREE TICKETS to see the show. It is her hope that hearing a first-hand account from an actual child of same-sex parents might alleviate some of the doubt and/or fear that society imposes on less “traditional” parents and their family dynamics.

Regardless of whether you can get to the show, watch the trailer below, in which, among other things, Steinert demonstrates use of a turkey baster—and not on Thanksgiving. (Don’t worry, it’s not as explicit as that sounds.)
