A Trans Mom Shares Her Story

I had the pleasure of meeting journalist Dawn Ennis at the Creating Change conference last week, and was delighted to see her video this week in which she discusses what it is like for her “to be both trans and a widow. To be a mom whom my kids call ‘Dad.'”

The video is from a talk Dawn gave to the BBYO Jewish youth organization in Hartford, Connecticut. While she is Catholic, her children are Jewish and she is active in raising them Jewish (and leading the adult education committee at her synagogue). As part of an interfaith family myself (I’m Jewish; my spouse is Protestant but thoroughly supported our son’s bar mitzvah), I appreciate her insights into this aspect of her life as well.

She also talks about growing up, falling in love, transitioning, the death of her spouse, and parenting her own children.

Dawn also blogs at Life After Dawn, and writes for a number of media outlets, including NBC OUT, BuzzFeed, LGBTQ Nation, NewNowNext, and Advocate.com. Watch her below, or at her YouTube channel.
