Today You Are You: Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss

The truth is, Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, was born on March 2, 1904. Schools across the U.S. are celebrating his birth today, however, with the annual Read Across America Day, run by the National Education Association (NEA). Dr. Seuss is great, of course, for teaching kids to read—but he’s even better, I think, at conveying lessons of inclusion, acceptance, and self-confidence. If more people took those lessons to heart as they learned to read (or taught their kids), the world would be a better place.

I’d be hard pressed to name my favorite Seuss book, but I will point out this nice anti-racism (heck, any-ism) exercise from Teaching Tolerance, based on the good doctor’s The Sneetches.

What are your favorite Seuss moments or memories of reading his books (as a kid or with your kids)? I still recall laughing through the tongue-twisting Fox in Socks with our son when he was only two or three.
