More Same-Sex Couples Adopting, Says New York Times

Nineteen percent of same-sex couples raising children had an adopted child in the house in 2009, reported the New York Times yesterday. That’s up from eight percent in 2000. The article also looks at the struggles same-sex couples have to start families in the many states where they cannot jointly adopt.

I covered a lot of the same ground myself in a two-part series for Keen News Service back in April. (Part One, “HHS urges child welfare agencies to better serve LGBTQ youth,” and Part Two, “With children in need, states struggle over gay adoptive parents.”) The NYT offers some nice profiles of adoptive families, though, and is definitely worth a read (along with their piece from last Friday on gender variance in children, if you haven’t read it. It’s great to see topics like these getting positive mainstream coverage.
