First to Marry, After Five Decades

RingsDel Martin, 87, and Phyllis Lyon, 83, will be the first same-sex couple to have a legal wedding in California. The couple, who have been together for over five decades, were also the first to wed when San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom began marrying couples in 2004—marriages that were then revoked by the state. The couple were then among the plaintiffs in the case in which the state Supreme Court ruled same-sex couples have the right to marry.

Martin has one daughter from a previous marriage to a man. She and Lyon, as many of you know, are also among the mothers of the lesbian-rights movement.

Newsom will repeat Martin and Lyon’s ceremony at 5 p.m. on June 16, and this time, there is no doubt it is legal. Very many congratulations to the couple.
