“She Got Me Pregnant”: Episode 91

Helen and I assert that, contrary to recent headlines, lesbian parents are not better than straight ones (although we’re certainly no worse). We also discuss Thanksgivings past and future and some of our favorite holiday crafts and recipes. (Share yours in the comments!)

“She Got Me Pregnant”: Episode 90

This week, Helen and I discuss two new must-read books about LGBTQ families. We also share a classic children’s drawing book we’ve been enjoying with our son, and the joys of used office supplies.

“She Got Me Pregnant”: Episode 89

Helen and I bring you up to date on Scholastic’s refusal to carry a book with lesbian moms at its book fairs. The company has now made a step in the right direction, but is it enough? We also discuss Preacher’s Sons, a great new documentary showing five years in the lives of two gay dads and the five sons they adopt from California’s foster care system. Plus: If you think lesbian parenting is funny, you don’t know enough about wombats.

“She Got Me Pregnant”: Episode 88

I’m vlogging solo this week since Helen is away on business, so I’ve kept it short and sweet. I talk about seeing “Harry Potter: The Exhibition” with our son and reading the first book with him. I also discuss Scholastic’s request that an author change the lesbian moms of a character into a mom and a dad, the reaction from around the Internet, and the company’s response. (Regular readers will know I’ve covered the Scholastic issue extensively on the blog here already; I wanted to get the word out to the vlog-only audience as well.)

“She Got Me Pregnant”: Episode 87

Helen and I bring you this week’s video in 3D! Well, sort of. But we do discuss how Disney’s Toy Story holds up with another dimension, and what we think of the Mouse House’s new foray into nature films. We also go underwater with Kate Winslet, in a manner of speaking. (Thankfully, it has nothing to do with the Titanic.) Plus, how to get fall yardwork done by bribing your kids.

“She Got Me Pregnant:” Episode 86

Helen and I discuss the perfect baby present for Mary Cheney and Heather Poe’s second child. We then show off Helen’s Halloween fabric engineering skills, proving that with lesbians, it’s sometimes hard to tell who’s the more domestic one. On another seasonal note, we take a retro look at It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown and connect it to a real-life case of horrible injustice for a lesbian-headed family. Turning to happier matters, we share highlights from our family trip to a local science museum last weekend.

“She Got Me Pregnant”: Episode 85

Helen and I celebrate Banned Books Week with old and new LGBT-themed children’s books that made the American Library Association’s Most Challenged Books list (as well as a children’s book that was challenged in 1959 for promoting (gasp!) interracial marriage). We also commend President Obama for including same-sex-headed families in a recent proclamation. After that, it’s on to entertainment, where we discuss a live version of the classic Schoolhouse Rock (and manage not to burst into song too many times), as well as a great new series about the national parks.

“She Got Me Pregnant”: Episode 84

Helen and I devote this episode to kids’ music, inspired by a free, live concert we attended. Will They Might Be Giants, now with their third kids’ album, become the Schoolhouse Rock for the next generation? Is an album of “songs for kids with two moms” going to capture our children’s attention or is it too ghettoizing? (And what about the kids of single lesbian parents?) Plus, we insist that we like meeting viewers in real life, and encourage you to say hi if you see us out and about.

“She Got Me Pregnant”: Episode 83

Helen and I discuss a melodrama shot entirely at Ikea (without the staff knowing) and how motherhood may have helped Kim Clijsters win at the U.S. Open. We also give you our thoughts on the anime-crossover movie Ponyo, now out from Disney with Tina Fey, Cate Blanchett, and Lily Tomlin among those redubbing the Japanese original.

“She Got Me Pregnant”: Episode 82

Helen and I offer some parenting-focused advice to Ilene Chaiken as she begins to develop her new series, The Real L Word. We also share some end-of-summer tips on camping with kids and preparing for back-to-school time. Finally, we draw some never-before-drawn parallels between Disney’s The Jungle Book and Nurse Jackie. What do the same-sex parents in each show have in common?
