Lesbian Moms Have Star Trek-Themed Wedding
Because here at Mombian, I’m dedicated to bringing you all the really important news about lesbian moms: This is what happens when you let same-sex couples get hitched—they do so with their own style. Anita Bayliss and Margaret Wood had a Star Trek-themed civil partnership ceremony in Swansea, South Wales, to commemorate their meeting in a [...]
The Allure of Old-Fashioned Games
It’s been one of those weeks, so I’m going to forgo my usual political roundup for something a little more lighthearted. On our vacation last week, my spouse and I played some fierce games of Scrabble. It’s a long-time habit with us, and we in fact own travel Scrabble sets in at least three different sizes. (Geeks, [...]
The New Yorker Lesbian Mom Cartoon
I’ve been writing Mothers’ (‘s) Day for years (at least as far back as 2007); now the New Yorker makes the punctuation funny in one of its famed cartoons. Let’s not forget, however, that while Heather may have two mommies, Jane may have only one—but she may still be a lesbian. Here’s wishing you a happy day [...]
Most Powerful Lesbian Moms in America 2011
Yes, it’s that time of year again! Out magazine just published its fifth annual list of “The Power 50: The Most Powerful Gay Men and Women in America,” which means it’s time for my fifth annual list of The Most Powerful Lesbian Moms in America. The definition of “power” is subjective, of course. For the purposes [...]
New Social App Helps Lesbians Find Sperm Donors
Lesbians seeking to get pregnant now have a new tool at their disposal: Dōnr, a new app for mobile devices that lets them check out the credentials of potential sperm donors. Like the social app for gay men, Grindr, that helps men find potential mates nearby, Dōnr lets lesbians access profiles of men in close proximity to see if they might be suitable candidates for providing genetic material.
The Most Powerful Lesbian Moms in America
Out magazine just published their fourth annual list of “The Power 50: The Most Powerful Gay Men and Women in America,” and David Mixner has posted his list of the Twenty Most Powerful Lesbians in American Politics, which means it’s time for my fourth annual list of The Most Powerful Lesbian Moms in America. The [...]
Lesbian Albatrosses Welcome Chick
The two female albatrosses in New Zealand who have been incubating an egg together are now the proud parents of a little chick. The Times Online reports: For the next six months the new parents will take turns to alternately guard and feed the chick, with one protecting it from predators while the other goes [...]
Gay Dads Get a Lift at IKEA
One more reason I love IKEA. Actual photo from the IKEA in Stoughton, Mass. (And yes, there was another elevator next to it with a “man” and a “woman” and a child—or a butch and a femme, depending on your perspective. One of the figures was in a dress. Interpret it as you will. That [...]
Where Can You “Marry Gay”?
While you’re waiting to see if the California Supreme Court is going to announce their opinion filing on Prop 8 today, as rumored (with the actual announcement coming tomorrow), check out Can I Marry Gay?, a simple but brilliant little Web app that lets you see if the state you’re in will let you and [...]
Shakespeare on Lesbians
Today marks the traditional observance of Shakespeare’s birthday. In honor of the Bard, therefore, I give you two lesbianish quotes. The first is from his gender-mix-up comedy Twelfth Night. Viola, disguised as a man, comments upon the Countess Olivia: She made good view of me; indeed, so much That methought her eyes had lost her [...]
The Most Powerful Lesbian Moms in America
Out magazine just published their third annual list of “The Power 50: The Most Powerful Gay Men and Women in America,” which means it’s time for my third annual list of The Most Powerful Lesbian Moms in America. The definition of “power” is subjective, of course. For the purposes of this list, I considered it [...]
The Taste of Victory
Just so you know I meant it: I did indeed make a maple cornbread to celebrate the two great states of Vermont and Iowa. (Click link for recipe.) And it was delicious.
Where Do You Socialize with LGBT Families?
Let’s do another poll and explore how we build community and friendship: {democracy:19}
What Ben and Jerry’s Flavor Means Equality?
Vermont may soon enact marriage equality, according to television station WCAX. When I think of Vermont, I think of two things first: maple syrup and Ben and Jerry’s. The question then arises: If you were to suggest a new flavor for Ben and Jerry’s to celebrate equality in their state, what would it be? I’m [...]
That Was No Ladle, That Was My Knife
Just for fun, as a break from all the politics: A sculptor friend of mine, Julia Levesque, has created an interactive art installation about identity. In it, she asks viewers to share the type of fork, knife, spoon, or other piece of silverware that best represents them. Her Web site explains: Our terminology for self-description [...]
A Lesbian Mom Presidential Candidate?
Tired of the election already? Dissatisfied with rhetoric from both parties? Well, there’s a new candidate on the trail, and she appears to be a lesbian mom: Senator Julia Polonia Foley DeWiki (affectionately known as Mop), born February 29th 1964 is an independent candidate in the election for the US presidency which will be decided [...]
Penguin Chick Has Two Moms
Tango had two dads. Now, an unnamed Little Blue Penguin at the New England Aquarium has two moms. Okay, that’s a bit misleading to readers of this blog. I had the same misconception, though, when I read the headline “Penguin ‘mothers’ make daily care a labor of love” in today’s Boston Globe. The article explains: [...]
Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry’s
Tomorrow, Tuesday, April 29, is Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry’s. Yep, that’s right. Free cones at any B & J’s participating Scoop Shops. No purchase necessary. (Though if you come home with an extra pint or two, don’t blame me.) What’s your favorite B & J flavor? I have a perverse love for [...]

Reader Appreciation Day: Families Like Mine Giveaway
It’s Reader Appreciation Day, an event organized by Robin Reagler of The Other Mother. I thought it would be appropriate, therefore, to have another giveaway, this time of Abigail Garner’s must-read book, Families Like Mine: Children of Gay Parents Tell It Like It Is. Abigail writes from her own experience of having a gay dad [...]
Working It Out
This week’s poll is in honor of season three of Work Out, which provides just enough women’s-sports coverage (and lesbian visibility) to get us through the gap between the end of March Madness and the start of the WNBA season. (Then it’s on to Wimbledon, the Olympics, and the U.S. Open here in the Mombian [...]
The Most Powerful Lesbian Moms in America
Out magazine just published their second annual list of “The Power 50: The Most Powerful Gay Men and Women in America,” which means it’s time for my second annual list of The Most Powerful Lesbian Moms in America. The definition of “power” is subjective, of course. For the purposes of this list, I considered it [...]
Online Drum Fun
Looking for an engaging, non-branded online game for your young ones? Try the Tiny Drum Machine. Not a “kids’ game” per se, it nevertheless entertained my four-year-old for better parts of this afternoon. It’s a simple music-making program where you can specify notes and tempo or let it randomly entertain you. There are five variations, [...]
Mary-and-Heather Baby Guessing Game
Mary Cheney, lesbian daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney, and her partner Heather Poe are expecting the birth of their son any day now. Back when I worked in the corporate world, someone would always start an office pool when a colleague was expecting. Height, weight, gender (if unknown)—all were fair game. I’m not sure [...]
