Colorado lesbian moms Fran and Anna Simon have married/civil unioned/committed to each other four times. Their seven-year-old son is a little tired of all the fuss.

The Simons were the first couple to receive a civil union certificate in Colorado, after a religious wedding nine years before that. They squeezed in a marriage last July when some clerks issued licenses before a stay was enforced. Last Wednesday, they married one more time in case there was any debate about the legality of the earlier license.

Fran explained in an e-mail:

We got married yesterday by Denver Mayor Hancock because Attorney General Suthers said our license from July was not valid and that we should apply for a new one. For the record, Denver County Clerk & Record Debra Johnson (who is openly lesbian) asked legal counsel and they said they believe the July license is valid; however, Debra Johnson offered free licenses to those who want to get married again just in case.

She added:

We only found out at 9:30 a.m. yesterday morning that Mayor Hancock wanted to marry us, and that we should get the license at 11:45 and the ceremony and press conference would be at 12:30. So we pulled Jeremy out of school telling him we were getting married, and he said, “Ughhhh. Again?!?” I assured him this would be the last time. Then he insisted on bringing his violin and playing for everyone in the rotunda of the City and County Building while Anna and I got ready in the bathroom. We celebrated last night at a victory party on the steps of the federal courthouse at which Governor Hickenlooper, Senator Mark Udall, Tim Gill and many others spoke.

See the Simons here at the Denver Westword in Slides 1 to 4. Jeremy and his violin are Slide 2. Clearly he rose to the occasion.

Congratulations to the Simons and to all of the couples marrying this week in Colorado and elsewhere!
