Grandmothers (also an Olympic Medalist and Fashion Entrepreneur) Reflect on Marriage Equality

Olympic medalist and financial executive Gail Marquis and her spouse, entrepreneur and fashion commentator Audrey Smaltz, spoke recently with MSNBC about marriage equality, their own relationship, and their granddaughter.

Marquis played on the silver-medal-winning U.S. Women’s Olympic Basketball team in 1976, the first year women played the sport in the Olympics. She’s now a financial executive who works with foundations and non-profits. Smaltz was a fashion model and now owns her own company that does backstage management for fashion shows.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down part of the Defense of Marriage Act last year, Smaltz says, “We are not a novelty anymore.”

And Marquis relates that their granddaughter says, “Those two really have fun together!” I can only hope that if my spouse and I ever become grandmothers, our grandchild says the same about us.

Go read the rest of their interview for more — and if you haven’t seen the wonderful video they did last year for Freedom to Marry, take a look:

(Full disclosure: Marquis is a member of the Council of Advisors for the Wellesley Centers for Women, where I have my day job, but I’ve never met her and she has no direct impact on my job.)
