LGBT Parenting Roundup

roundup_200 A few items I haven’t posted about previously, including a couple of family profiles, some good national and international news brought to you by the letter “A,” and Xena.

  • British celebrity chef Yotam Ottolenghi, who has been out as a gay man, has come out about the birth of his daughter. He told the Guardian, “I know we can’t be shy about telling our story, that privacy just isn’t an option. That’s because we could only have had Max, and hopefully also a future sibling, thanks to other people who have shared their stories.”
  • Monica Hurlbert wrote at the Advocate, “How A Tomboy Learned to Play With Barbies: Motherhood changes everything.” A great piece on gender identity and expression.
  • Austria has passed a law allowing second-parent adoption for same-sex couples, making it the 13th European country to do so (after Austria, Belgium, Britain, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden).
  • In what is believed to be a state first, a judge in Mobile County, Alabama allowed a lesbian mom to have standard child visitation rights without any restrictions on having unmarried partners stay overnight. Same-sex couples, of course, cannot be legally married in the state.
  • Finally, Xena could be making a comeback. (How is this LGBT parenting news? Well, in the show, Xena had a daughter. And Xena and Gabrielle’s relationship was pretty clear by the end of the series. I say it counts.)
