North Carolina Votes to Ban Same-Sex Relationship Recognition Under State Constitution

North Carolina voters have approved a state constitutional amendment that bans not only marriage for same-sex couples, but also any form of relationship recognition. The state already banned marriage for same-sex couples by statute; putting it into the state constitution makes it harder to challenge.

I’m sure every LGBT news source (and most mainstream ones) will have further analysis in the hours to come. North Carolinian Pam Spaulding of Pam’s House Blend, has offered her initial thoughts, and that’s a good place to start.

The only good news from North Carolina tonight is that Rep. Marcus Brandon, the state’s only openly gay state legislator, has won reelection.

My sympathies to Protect All NC Families and the many others who worked to try and defeat the amendment.

This is the “long” part of that moral arc, I’m afraid. But bend towards justice it will. Just not tonight.

  1. This is so sad.
First they refuse us the right to marry, then they refuse to even recognize us as a couple. What’s next?
    An underground railroad to Canada?
