LGBT Parenting Roundup

Personal Profiles

  • South Coast Today (Massachusetts) profiles several gay dads and their struggle for acceptance.
  • Pediatrician Maja Castillo writes for Gay City News about what happens when a child prefers one parent over the other, especially in cases of a biological and non-biological mother.
  • Two lesbian moms in Birmingham, England have launched the U.K.’s first gay-only fertility clinic. Irish lesbian blog Gaelick has an interview with them.

Sports and Entertainment

  • Ellen DeGeneres will be producing the big-screen version of Jodi Picoult’s new novel about lesbian moms, Sing You Home.
  • Two gay characters on the long-running U.K. soap Coronation Street will become dads, the first gay parents on the show. (The show has had a lesbian couple on it for quite some time, although they’re a little young for parenthood, IMHO. After Ellen has more on them, though.)
  • WNBA MVP, Olympian, and lesbian mom Sheryl Swoopes is returning to the WNBA after two seasons off. She’ll be playing with the Tulsa Shock. And yes, she’s 40 years old. I guess I really have no excuse not to get to the gym now.

Politics and Law

  • The Vancouver Sun explains, “How Alberta pioneered gay adoption,” and how former Premier Ralph Klein, despite being opposed to marriage equality, promoted private adoptions, thus paving the way for same-sex couples to adopt.
  • A bill in the Texas legislature, introduced by Rep. Rafael Anchia (D-Dallas) would require that the names on the birth certificate of an adopted child must consist of the mother and the father of the child, no others. (Anchia filed similar legislation last session.)
