[...] The lesbian community was split about the film. Some, upon learning that one of the moms has an affair with their children’s sperm donor, felt it was a rehash of the old cliché that a lesbian really just needs a man. Others (including myself) felt that Cholodenko upended that myth by never having the mom question her lesbian identity and by having her end the affair—citing her identity, her love for her spouse, and her commitment to their marriage. It is more about the universals of human relationships than anything else. (My full review here.) [...]

Thanks, Polly! And I'm behind in my reading, but I see now that you have your own review up. I like that you put Kids in the context of other films--and I thoroughly agree that the issues raised here should become subjects for wider discussion. Let's hope Kids is only the start of a trend in quality LGBT-family film making, so we can keep the conversation going.

Fantastic, incisive review, Dana. Per usual, our go-to gal.

I especially like:

As almost-adults, they have already “turned out”—and they are indeed all right.

And also:

Cholodenko thus simultaneously informs the audience about lesbian families and shows how much of our experience is really a subset of the greater human experience.

Concise and on the mark. My hope is that the other really rich issues present in the film -- maybe most rich for those of us lesbian parents; I concur with you on the perspective of the kids themselves -- will eventually become the focus of attention I believe they should be. Ironically, the more folks obsess on this dimension of the plot (an construction; a means to an end), the more significance it holds. And the significance I believe it really holds -- what seems clear from the plot's movement and resolution -- is really something altogether different. And very much appreciated.
