“Children Speak for Same-Sex Marriage”: New York Times

The children of same-sex parents are “helping to change the narrative of same-sex marriage to a story about families from one about couples,” says New York Times reporter Sarah Wildman. Whether minors or adults, they are playing an important role in marriage equality fights around the country.

“Those of us who have lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered parents realized that, at root, one of the things debated [in marriage equality battles] is us,” explains Meredith Fenton, former program director at Colage.

Wildman does note, however, that some children of LGBT parents are skeptical of the community’s focus on marriage equality, feeling that marriage should not be the only avenue through which people access certain protections and benefits.

The article is well worth reading, if only because it is one of the few that gives voice to the adult children of LGBT parents. The only thing puzzling me is how it ended up in the Fashion & Style section. Still, it’s a good one. Go read.
