Thought your readers might like to see the results of the very informal survey I did of my lesbian mom friends and how they celebrated Mothers' Day.

My mom never said it out loud, but she raised me to feel that my life and my decisions belong to me, not to my parents or anyone else.

As I learn about other people's childhoods, I see how rare and empowering that message was. As my own son grows I can see how tempting it is to control everything about a child's life. I hope I can strike the right balance between support and empowerment.
