Breaking News: Lesbian Mom Saved from Deportation – For Now

Breaking news: Shirley Tan, the lesbian mom who was on the brink of being deported and torn from her 12-year-old sons and her partner of 20 years, may now stay in the U.S. through 2010, the end of this session of Congress.

Her reprieve is thanks to California Rep. Jackie Speier and Sen. Diane Feinstein, who introduced a private bill on her behalf. While it is unlikely the bill will pass, Melanie Nathan reports, it will allow Tan to stay with her family long enough (we hope) for passage of the Uniting American Families Act (UAFA), which would allow people to sponsor a same-sex partner for immigration.

Kudos to Rep. Speier and Sen. Feinstein and all those who have worked to keep the Tan-Mercado family together.

Now e-mail (or call) your members of Congress and tell them to support UAFA!
