Marriage Equality Win in Connecticut!

RingsThe Connecticut Supreme Court just ruled in favor of marriage equality for same-sex couples:

Our conventional understanding of marriage must yield to a more contemporary appreciation of the rights entitled to constitutional protection. Interpreting our state constitutional provisions in accordance with firmly established equal protection principles leads inevitably to the conclusion that gay persons are entitled to marry the otherwise qualified same sex partner of their choice. To decide otherwise would require us to apply one set of constitutional principles to gay persons and another to all others. The guarantee of equal protection under the law, and our obligation to uphold that command, forbids us from doing so. In accordance with these state constitutional requirements, same sex couples cannot be denied the freedom to marry. [Emphasis mine.]

I am especially happy to hear this, since I grew up in Connecticut and still have relatives there. More news and analysis to follow. . . .

UPDATE: 12:07p.m.: The Hartford Courant notes that the right-wing will now throw its efforts behind a measure on the November ballot, when voters will be asked whether the state should convene a constitutional convention. Such a convention could reopen the question of whether the state constitution should allow same-sex couples to marry. Add Connecticut, then, to Arizona, California, and Florida, the states with critical marriage-equality ballot questions next month.

  1. My longtime partner is from Connecticut, too. When we heard the news she said, “We can go get married in my home town!”

I would still like to be married here in Colorado. This decision today makes me hopeful that it may actually happen in my lifetime.
