The part that baffles me about Nancy Polikoff's approach (and I've read her whole book) is that she seems to advocate doing the very complicated work of building new frameworks outside of marriage, instead of the direct approach of expanding marriage. Yes, second-parent adoption is a great thing. But it is still far more time-consuming and expensive for a couple than getting a marriage license (in places that have both options), and it still leaves individual families in the second-class position of asking for court or judicial approval for recognition of their status as a family.

Nancy's book is a great reference for LGBT activists and she's doing great work in this field. Thanks for putting the interview together, Dana!

We are in contact with hundreds of parents right now that he court has not protected the rights of one parent or the other or the rights of children to have a relationship with both parents. We took our issues to Washington DC last week. Anyone who thinks all courts and Judges make deciasions in the "Best interest of the children is livig in a fantasy world. Most courts and Judges make decisions based on which Attorney they like best of which defendant will continually file, which generates literally billions of dollars for the system. They will move the earth to go after a deadbeat mom or dad but the could care less if both parents have access to their kids. No, I don't have a child support order against me and no, I don't have an axe to grind. I am a parents and childrens rights activists and I am speaking from experience of the hundreds of non-custodial parents that contact us for help seeing their kids.
