Interesting article. I really appreciate the topic of parents being role models for their children; it's something that my partner and I are very aware of, in terms of what example we set for my preteen son. I hope the fact that he sees us not rushing into things too fast (it took us two years to reach living together and engaged) will be a positive influence on how he approaches relationships as an adult.

As for religion, it's fairly clear from the article that while the folks in Illinois may or may not be marrying for religion, they're definitely not marrying for rights (since the state doesn't grant them any). I'd disagree with RJP3's comments about religion. When my partner and I announced our engagement to a congregation of 100+ people who know us and care about us, the joy they took in hearing that announcement was palpable. It wasn't about us trying to normalize ourselves; it was about sharing our joy with people who care about us as a family. Considering we're the only openly gay or lesbian people in the congregation, we're also definitely moving in uncharted territory here -- church sure isn't giving us a sense of direction about any of this!

I'm marrying my partner for rights not for religion.

We are atheists and believe, "No gods, No masters"

Uh - no duh.

Those who want to conform and seek "normalization" will of course try to redifine religion to embrace them --- and normalize them.

Freedom of choice and lack of direction scares people --- religion makes them feel better.

Gay people I know are getting married for RIGHTS not religion.
