Continuing my coast-to-coast exploration of the family side of Pride, here are a few shots from the Family Garden at San Francisco Pride 2008. Yes, it’s official: Pride is now as much about crayons as it is about feather boas and motorcycles.
In addition to watching our son climb all over the playground with his face painted like a tiger, Helen and I also met the fabulous Polly of LesbianDad and her partner. (Yes, their kids really are as cute as they are in Polly’s photos.)
The Family Garden was sponsored by COLAGE, Our Family Coalition, and The San Francisco LGBT Center, who did a great job providing activities, security, and community.
We all couldn’t have been more pleased to have met your family in the flesh, and shared your company. Whatever it is you’re feeding your son to get him to be as wonderful as he is, I want to know.
We spent our afternoon at Pride in and around the Family Garden and it was one of the best Pride experiences I have ever had. Our daughter made a friend, our recently potty trained son loved the miniature kid-sized porta-potty, they both had a great time in the playground and my partner and I loved the shade.
We did laugh at one point about a heterosexual couple that was sitting right outside the fence of the play area and making out quite heavily. I told my partner that I wanted to to go tell them to take the heavy petting someplace else; how was I supposed to explain to my kids why a man and a woman were kissing in public?
Were you wearing white Mombian t-shirts? I saw them and thought about asking you if you were also a fan/reader/subscriber. I decided it was way too geeky. Now I just feel like I missed an opportunity to meet you in person and tell you how much I love this blog.
Hi, Shawna! Yes, that was us in the Mombian t-shirts. Maybe we’ll run into each other again next year (though we’re really Boston folks; just out West visiting Helen’s family).
