I am a straight married woman with three children and I have never understood why parents think they are protecting their kids by keeping them ignorant. Don' teach them about birth control, and they won't have sex--yeah, right! Don't let them know that gay families are normal, and they'll stay straight. Don't acknowledge that kids make mistakes (ie. expect them to be perfect at all times) and they won't drink or do drugs... I'm all for honesty and acceptance. It's disheartening to think how many parents are still turning their kids into little bigots. On the other hand, it's encouraging to see how many young people no longer consider sexual orientation a big deal. For them, a person is a person, a family is a family and as long as there is genuine caring and understanding, all is OK. So I think in the long run, there will be space for everyone on our planet, and the new generation will be much more open-minded than the old.
