Good point--and it's worth noting that Rowling revealed this in the context of answering a reader's question about whether Dumbledore ever found love. She wasn't doing a specific exposé on gay characters in her books--so you're right, there are a lot of unanswered questions, and room for speculation, should we wish to do so.

If Dumbledore being gay is taken in the context of the book - I mean, how many 12 year olds know who their teachers are dating? Or care? In the Hogwarts world, who did McGonagall date? Or Slughorn? Or Sprout? None of them had illuminated personal lives, because the teachers' personal lives were largely irrelevant to the book, and to the lives of the kids who were central. The book is told from the perspective of children, and children never want to think of their parents or teachers as people with sex lives.
I mean, I recognize the opportunity provided by a gay character in the most successful kids' books in history, but I think context still matters. We don't know that Grendel was Albus' only love affair; it was the only one that mattered to the story. He may have had other, very functional and happy relationships between the ages of twenty and eighty. And hopefully that can be pointed out as we and our kids read the stories, too.
