I have seen parent-child relationships really damaged by something so easily avoided as the son wants to join the wrestling team but the dad used to play football, so he pushes the son to do that. I'm all for just knowing my kids, observing them and giving them some support when needed, but just in general letting them be themselves, even if that's very different from how I am or how I imagined they would be. The older never wavered, but I think the younger has only because he has felt safe to in our home.
