Because her wife is a former Air Force captain, they get their insurance through a company that serves only current and former military members and their families - not exactly a bastion of liberalism. The other day, I called to ask a question about our car insurance. The rep wouldn’t answer, but asked “Do you have a power of attorney on the policy?” I replied that I’d been on the policy for many years, and had never been asked about POA. The rep still hesitated.
Anyone that doesn't think the word has a very powerful meaning is just deluding themselves. I was staying in Boston with a friend while her California domestic partnered partner had surgery and the duty nurse started to give her the "I can only release information" speach. She's trying to explain things and I just tap her on the shoulder and say "you're in Massachusetts, tell her you're married." Right away she's transferred and has a full report on how the surgery is going.
