I was staying in Boston with a friend while her California domestic partnered partner had surgery and the duty nurse started to give her the "I can only release information" speach. She's trying to explain things and I just tap her on the shoulder and say "you're in Massachusetts, tell her you're married." Right away she's transferred and has a full report on how the surgery is going. Anyone that doesn’t think the word has a very powerful meaning is just deluding themselves.
