She also makes the important point that it shouldn't matter whether sexual orientation is innate or not—lesbians and gay men still deserve equal rights. I agree completely. I also believe, however, that we need to counter the ultra-conservative argument that being gay is <em>always</em> a choice, and therefore correctable. For me, the importance of the biological argument is <em>not</em> that those who were born gay have a better claim to gay rights than those for whom it was a choice. We don't. Nevertheless, if we can show that being gay is innate, even for <em>some</em> of us, we undercut the conservative argument that being gay is "<a href="http://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060503/NEWS02/605030363/1009" rel="nofollow">contrary to the laws of nature,</a>" an argument that hurts <em>all</em> of us. If we show that being gay is in harmony with the laws of nature, then it doesn't matter if we sing that harmony from birth or chose to sing it later on. For me, the importance of the biological argument is not that those who were born gay have a better claim to gay rights than those for whom it was a choice. We don’t. Nevertheless, if we can show that being gay is innate, even for some of us, we undercut the conservative argument that being gay is “contrary to the laws of nature,” an argument that hurts all of us. If we show that being gay is in harmony with the laws of nature, then it doesn’t matter if we sing that harmony from birth or chose to sing it later on.
