Postcards from Buster: DVD with “Sugartime” Episode Available

Postcards from Buster - Buster\'s Outdoor JourneysThe “Sugartime” episode of kids’ show Postcards from Buster is now available on the compilation Postcards from Buster - Buster’s Outdoor Journeys.

U. S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings triggered an outcry among LGBT families and allies last year when she denounced the episode, in which rabbit Buster visits a lesbian family’s maple-sugar farm. The episode isn’t about being lesbian, per se. It’s about maple-sugar farming, and happens to feature lesbian farmers. The sheer normalcy of it is what likely scared Spellings and her ilk. (”My God, they could be living next to us.”)

It’s not obvious from the front of the DVD that “Sugartime” is included, so I thought I’d pass the word along.

  1. [...] The episode was #4130, so you can check your local listings to see when it airs in your area. Episode #4131 apparently also continues the story. I’m looking forward to seeing how Gina’s storyline unfolds. Although Sesame Street has shied away from overtly LGBT characters (perhaps fearing an outcry similar to that of Postcards from Buster), they’ve tackled many other issues of acceptance and diversity over the years, including race, language, and (dis)ability. Maybe in a few years, the climate will be right for them to show LGBT families on the street so many of us know so well. One more reason to get out and vote today. [...]

  2. [...] I was thrilled, therefore to see that Melissa Etheridge guest stars in the episode “Step by Step,” where she reads a poem to one of the characters. She also does a short promo for the show in which she asserts “If you get a child wild about reading, you get a child wild about learning.” Bravo, PBS, for showcasing a lesbian mom, despite the ultra-right’s uproar about the Postcards from Buster episode that featured a lesbian family.
